The team played in the Essex League. In 1963 it was decided to start a new team calling it “Chelmsford Netball Club” based at Rainsford School, still playing in the Essex League. There was enthusiasm to play netball and develop teams in the Chelmsford district and Jean contacted various businesses including Marks and Spencers, Hoffmans, Essex Chronicle, Boots and Chelmsford Borough Council, asking if they would form teams. As a result of this a single division was formed, involving about 40 players that included Jean Armstrong, Jean Hamblin and Val Baker all of whom are active in today's league. The first Chelmsford & District Netball committee was made up with Jean Armstong (Chair), Beryl Bultitude (Treasurer), Marion Windley (secretary, now Hampshire county), Pam Burchell and Jean Wyatt. By 1969 a second division was formed and this has escalated to its present form of 12 divisions allowing 120 teams and over 1000 players, making it one of the largest leagues in England. In the early 70’s youngsters were encouraged to play Netball and the first junior team was formed and called Chelmsford Capri setting the trend for all future Chelmsford junior teams to have names starting with ‘C’. Initially only half a dozen teams were formed and were connected to existing senior teams. The Junior league now comprises 8 divisions involving over 90 teams and is a measure of time - grandchildren of the original league members actively play in Chelmsford & District Netball League. With seniors and juniors the league runs a massive 208 teams involving over 1500 players. This is impressive growth and a reflection of the keenness and effort of many individuals over a period of 40 years. All matches are played at a Central Venue - New Hall School, Boreham, Chelmsford
